Men's Body Image Woes: A Widespread Crisis Demanding Attention
14 Nov, 2025
Summary
- 48% of men aged 16-40 report poor body image affecting mental health
- Body confidence advocate shares personal battle with body dysmorphia
- Toxic masculinity and social media fuel men's reluctance to discuss body issues

According to a 2021 report, a staggering 48% of men aged 16-40 in the UK are experiencing poor body image that affects their mental health. This alarming trend has been brought to light by body confidence advocate and author Jules Von Hep, who recently shared his personal journey on the Well Enough podcast.
Von Hep revealed that his struggles with body dysmorphia started in his early teens, shaping every aspect of his life. From the parties he attended to the jobs he pursued, his distorted self-perception led to self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and eating disorders throughout his teens and twenties. It wasn't until he launched his own beauty brand focused on body positivity that Von Hep decided to publicly embrace self-acceptance.
Psychologist Dr. Brendan J Dunlop, who joined Von Hep on the podcast, explained that these issues are incredibly common, particularly among young queer men. He attributed the problem to the influence of social media, peer pressure, and rigid societal beauty standards. Despite the body positivity movement, these narratives often fail to cater to the unique challenges faced by men.
Von Hep agreed, noting that the lack of diverse representation in men's fashion and media perpetuates the problem. He called for brands to challenge the singular "ideal" body type and for industry professionals to prioritize societal impact over sales.
