16 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Historic train stations transformed into high-end accommodations
- Preserving architectural grandeur while adding modern amenities
- Experts praise repurposing of historic buildings over demolition

In the past few years, several grand old train stations around the world have undergone remarkable transformations. These once-neglected architectural showpieces from the late 1800s and early 1900s are now being reborn as high-end hotels, preserving their historic details and grandeur while adding modern amenities for today's travelers.
Toland Grinnell, president and chief operating officer at EverGreene Architectural Arts, praised these repurposing efforts, saying it is "super exciting" when historic buildings can be revived in "interesting ways" rather than being demolished. By keeping as much of the original historic fabric as possible and carefully integrating modern elements, these hotels allow guests to experience the romance and elegance of the golden age of rail travel.
As automobiles and air travel became more popular in the 20th century, many of these lavishly decorated train stations fell into disrepair. But now, their soaring halls and intricate ironwork are bustling with activity once again, serving as inspiring gateways for a new generation of travelers.
