A dedicated volunteer is celebrating six decades of guiding walks in the Lake District National Park. Ron Wood, 78, began his service approximately 60 years ago, shortly after the park achieved its National Park status in May 1951. At that time, the park was less developed and significantly less busy.
Wood has witnessed the Lake District transform into a popular destination, now attracting around 18 million visitors each year, which he notes can be challenging due to increased car usage. He remains passionate about sharing his extensive knowledge of the park's natural beauty and history with visitors.
To commemorate the Lake District National Park's 75th anniversary, the Lake District National Park Authority is organizing more than 80 volunteer-led walks between May and August. Ron Wood is among the guides participating in these special events, continuing his lifelong commitment to the park.
