Couple Ends Festive Tradition, Gives Lights Away

For over half a century, a Portchester home has been a beacon of Christmas cheer, but this tradition is now concluding. Bill and Barbara Wright, residents of The Crossways, began illuminating their bungalow in 1971, creating a cherished local spectacle that has delighted neighbours and visitors alike. Now in their eighties, the couple has chosen to retire their festive displays after more than 50 years.

The Wrights' elaborate Christmas decorations, which started modestly, grew into a significant attraction. Beyond spreading holiday spirit, their displays served a vital charitable purpose, raising substantial sums for local causes. In recent years, their efforts directly supported Woodsy's Pantry foodbank, providing essential aid to struggling families in the community.

As they step down from their decades-long endeavor, the couple plans to pass on their collection of lights and decorations to Woodsy's Pantry in the new year. This generous donation will allow the foodbank to continue its important work, ensuring the spirit of giving associated with the Wrights' display lives on.
