Rescued Kittens Beat Deadly Virus, Face New Health Hurdles
11 Jun
Summary
- 44 cats and kittens saved from euthanasia at local animal control.
- Rescued animals avoided panleukopenia after initial exposure.
- Several kittens now require treatment for other health conditions.

Approximately two weeks ago, Furkids rescued 44 cats and kittens facing euthanasia at a local animal control facility. These animals had been exposed to the panleukopenia virus but, thankfully, none have developed the illness since their arrival. They were immediately placed in quarantine to prevent any potential spread.
While the animals successfully avoided panleukopenia, some have developed other health issues. One kitten requires surgery for eyelid agenesis and has a heart murmur. Several other kittens are being treated for calicivirus, a common respiratory infection in shelters, and are showing daily improvement.
This Thursday, all 44 cats and kittens will undergo retesting for panleukopenia and receive comprehensive health examinations. Those cleared will be spayed or neutered before becoming available for adoption. Furkids credits community support for enabling these extensive rescue efforts and is accepting donations for ongoing care.
