In a significant act of community support, approximately 3,000 families in West Baltimore received Thanksgiving turkeys thanks to a collaborative initiative. Volunteers on Tuesday morning loaded thousands of turkeys into vehicles, destined for distribution throughout the community. This heartwarming effort was a partnership between the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).
Ron Cummins, Senior Vice President at UMMC, stated that the initiative aims to expand support beyond hospital walls, recognizing food as a crucial component of healthcare. Christine Crabbs, Senior Director of Community Health, highlighted the pervasive food insecurity in West Baltimore, where many residents lack consistent access to healthy food options.
Amanda Barnes from UMB's Carey School of Law noted the current financial strains affecting the community, making such contributions especially vital. The organizations expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back, with organizers noting the smiles and thankfulness received during previous food giveaways, underscoring the deep need and appreciation within the community.
