In March, NHS England data revealed a record surge in referrals for children and young people's mental health services. A total of 932,822 under-18s were actively referred, with 134,837 new referrals, both figures being the highest on record.
Urgent care referrals for young people also saw an increase, reaching 8,631. This highlights the escalating demand for services and the significant challenges in providing timely support.
The average waiting time for mental health treatment for this age group exceeded 300 days for the eighth consecutive month. In severe cases, patients waited over 1,000 days, a record high indicating prolonged delays.
YoungMinds, analyzing the data, warned of a mental health emergency among youth, citing academic pressures, cost of living, and inequality as contributing factors. They emphasized the need for immediate action and increased investment in mental health services.
Currently, it is estimated that one in five young individuals between eight and 25 years old experience mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
