- A 'wall of hope' made of 20,000 Post-it notes displayed at IIT Madras.
- Initiative launched in October 2025 by SCARF's youth mental health department.
- Nearly 400 messages expressed distress or suicidal thoughts among youth.
A unique 'wall of hope,' comprising 20,000 Post-it notes with personal aspirations, was assembled at IIT Madras Research Park. This initiative, launched in October 2025 by the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), is part of a year-long youth-led mental health campaign.
Messages were gathered from adolescents and young adults across various educational institutions and youth spaces in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and West Bengal. Dr. Shiva Prakash Srinivasan of SCARF noted that hopelessness often precedes suicidal behavior, and this campaign sought to address it by encouraging discussions about hope and well-being.
Led by 400 trained youth ambassadors, the collected reasons for living included relationships, career goals, personal growth, and life purpose. However, approximately 400 out of the 20,000 messages indicated distress or suicidal thoughts. These notes provided a peer-led conversation starter for individuals struggling with their mental health.
Given Tamil Nadu's high suicide rates, particularly among young people, SCARF hopes to integrate this activity into broader mental health awareness efforts. The anonymity of the Post-it notes offered a safe space for expression, with the team guiding those in distress towards available counseling services.
