Youth Kidney Failure Soars: Lifestyle Triggers Blamed
12 Mar
Summary
- Young adults diagnosed with severe kidney disease are a growing concern.
- Diabetes, hypertension, and poor lifestyle habits are key culprits.
- Over 800 individuals under 45 await kidney transplants in Pune.

Nephrologists are observing a significant increase in severe kidney disease diagnoses among individuals in their early twenties, a stark contrast to a decade ago when older adults were primarily affected. This emerging crisis is attributed to lifestyle-related factors, including diabetes, hypertension, excessive salt consumption, and processed food intake.
Compounding these issues are sedentary lifestyles, disrupted sleep patterns, and demanding work hours, all contributing to the growing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in younger populations. Globally, CKD is a major cause of death from non-communicable diseases.
Data from Pune's Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) reveals a critical situation, with 1,970 patients awaiting kidney transplants as of March 6, 2026. Alarmingly, over 800 of these patients are under the age of 45, indicating kidney failure is no longer confined to the elderly.
While kidney transplants offer the best hope for end-stage patients, India faces a critical shortage of deceased organ donations, relying heavily on living donors. Delayed diagnosis due to lack of awareness further complicates the situation, transforming manageable conditions into life-altering crises for young adults.
