Young Indians Hit by Strokes: Alarming Rise in Under-45 Cases
5 Mar
Summary
- 13.8% of Indian stroke cases occur in individuals under 45.
- Hypertension, smokeless tobacco, and diabetes are key risks.
- Doctors urge public health emergency declaration for young strokes.

A study published in the International Journal of Stroke highlights a significant increase in stroke cases among young Indians, with 13.8% occurring in those under 45. Data from the ICMR's National Stroke Registry Programme indicates that hypertension, smokeless tobacco use, and diabetes are primary modifiable risk factors. Nearly half of these younger patients experience moderate stroke severity. Doctors in Bengaluru report that approximately 20% of their acute stroke cases involve young individuals, mirroring the national concern.
Neurologists emphasize that causes in younger patients differ from the elderly, including heart rhythm abnormalities, genetic disorders, and autoimmune conditions. Lifestyle factors such as sedentary work, lack of physical activity, stress, poor sleep, and substance use are also contributing. The impact on young stroke survivors is often greater due to their age and career stage. Experts call for young strokes to be a public health priority, advocating for early hypertension screening, inclusion of stroke awareness in education, and enhanced hospital preparedness.
