Young Hearts Under Siege: India's Silent Killer Epidemic
20 Mar
Summary
- Sudden deaths in young Indians linked to undiagnosed heart disease.
- Cardiovascular issues are the primary cause for these fatalities.
- Experts stress proactive heart health measures for all ages.

Recent data highlights a troubling increase in cardiovascular fatalities among young Indians, aged 18 to 45, since 2020. A significant 2025 AIIMS-ICMR study revealed that undiagnosed heart disease is the main driver behind these sudden deaths, accounting for 42.6% of cases. Inherited electrical heart disorders are also a likely cause for remaining unexplained fatalities.
Cardiologists are warning that the perceived invincibility of youth can be misleading. They are advocating for tailored heart health strategies. These include adopting a 'heart-first' diet rich in whole grains and lean proteins, minimizing processed foods and excess salt, and adhering to the 150-minute moderate-intensity exercise rule weekly. Mental hygiene through meditation is also recommended.
Furthermore, regular health check-ups for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar are crucial for early detection. Experts suggest integrating physical activity into daily routines, even at home, if a gym is inaccessible. This proactive approach is vital as heart disease is no longer solely an ailment of old age.
