Summary
- A six-year-old girl is raising awareness for blood plasma donations.
- Her brother, Monty, requires life-saving immunoglobulin infusions.
- The NHS aims to increase UK self-sufficiency in plasma collection.
A remarkable six-year-old named Seren has launched a personal campaign to raise awareness for blood plasma donations. Her motivation stems from her four-year-old brother, Monty, who relies on immunoglobulin infusions due to Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, which affected his antibody production.
Seren distributes leaflets and actively encourages people to donate plasma, understanding the critical need for this treatment. Her initiative has inspired her local Rainbows group leaders to donate and even create a special plasma badge and challenge pack.
The NHS confirmed that since March 2025, over 3,000 patients have benefited from life-saving immunoglobulin medicines derived from UK-donated plasma. While plasma donation centers exist and plasma is also collected from general blood donations, the UK currently achieves only 23% self-sufficiency for immunoglobulins.
Gerry Gogarty from NHS Blood and Transplant emphasized the ongoing efforts to expand the plasma collection program. He urged the public to come forward and donate blood or plasma to help protect patients who depend on these treatments.
