Yeovil District Hospital is preparing to reopen its maternity ward and Special Care Baby Unit on April 21, after nearly a year of closure. The services were initially shut down in May 2025 due to significant safety concerns identified by the Care Quality Commission.
The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has reported that critical safety issues, including understaffing and lessons from serious incidents, have been thoroughly addressed. This has involved a substantial recruitment drive, bringing in five paediatric consultants, neonatal nurses, a medical neonatal lead, and additional midwives.
Furthermore, the trust has integrated its workforce with Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and implemented enhanced training systems, including simulation and rotational training, to maintain staff skills. The physical environment of the maternity unit has also been upgraded with new fire doors, improved security, and redecoration.
Midwives and obstetricians are now proactively engaging with expectant parents. They are conducting one-to-one conversations to discuss birthplace options and address any concerns, ensuring a supportive environment for all service users. The trust encourages pregnant individuals to reach out to their community midwife with any questions.
