Yellow Fever Surges: 42 Countries at High Risk
25 Apr
Summary
- Yellow Fever poses a severe, potentially fatal hemorrhagic risk.
- Cases increased five-fold in South America during 2025.
- Mosquitoes in urban Africa could rapidly spread outbreaks.

A warning has been issued regarding the resurgence of Yellow Fever, a serious and potentially fatal mosquito-borne illness. The virus poses a high risk in 42 countries across Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
In South and Central America, 2025 saw a significant increase, with a 5.6-fold rise in confirmed cases compared to the previous year. Since early 2026, cases have continued to be reported, with outbreaks expanding beyond traditional risk areas like the Amazon region.
Africa also continues to report probable and confirmed Yellow Fever cases. Endemic areas face a high risk of transmission, exacerbated by the presence of Aedes mosquitoes in urban centers, increasing the potential for rapid, widespread outbreaks.
Yellow Fever infection can progress from initial flu-like symptoms to a severe hemorrhagic fever. This advanced stage can lead to jaundice, bleeding, and critical organ damage, with mortality rates as high as 50% in severe cases.
