16 Apr
Summary
- Xanax XR 3mg tablets distributed between August 2024 and May 2025 recalled.
- Recall due to failed dissolution specifications, classified as Class II by FDA.
- Patients with affected pills are urged to stop taking them immediately.

Viatris Specialty LLC has initiated a nationwide recall of 3mg tablets of Xanax XR. The distributor first announced the recall on March 17, with the nationwide recall now in effect on April 16. This action impacts 60-tablet bottles of the medication.
The reason cited for the recall is "failed dissolution specifications," according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This has resulted in a Class II recall designation, indicating potential for temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
The affected pills, with an expiration date of 02/28/2027 and lot number 8177156, were distributed between August 27, 2024, and May 29, 2025. Patients in possession of these specific Xanax XR tablets are instructed to cease consumption immediately.
While no adverse reactions have been reported to date, the California State Board of Pharmacy encourages pharmacies to review their recall procedures. Xanax, or alprazolam, is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety by slowing the central nervous system.
