Teenager Traumatized by Wrongful Abortion Travel
16 Mar
Summary
- An 18-year-old was wrongly sent from Northern Ireland to London for an abortion.
- The booking provider confused services available in Northern Ireland.
- The traumatised teenager bled and cramped while waiting for her flight home.

A schoolgirl, identified as Olivia, experienced significant trauma after being incorrectly sent from Northern Ireland to London for an abortion procedure in 2025. The 18-year-old was 18 weeks pregnant and could have received treatment locally, as abortion services are available in Northern Ireland up to 24 weeks.
Her mother stated that the entire ordeal was deeply upsetting, worsened by her daughter being away from home. Olivia was forced to wait for her flight back while experiencing bleeding and cramping. This incident occurred despite the decriminalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland in 2019 and the formal commissioning of services in 2022.
Pro-choice charity Alliance for Choice suggested that Olivia's case might be one of many women who travel unnecessarily due to a lack of public information and the absence of a local booking system. In 2023, 145 women from Northern Ireland still travelled to England or Wales for abortions.
The booking provider reportedly made the error due to confusion about the gestational limits for abortions in Northern Ireland. While the provider stated a commitment to high-quality care and reviews feedback, Olivia's family expressed anger and distress over the systemic flaw that necessitated her travel. The Department of Health stated its arrangements were working efficiently and anticipated a downward trend in travel as access information improves.
