BC Cities Worst for Pollen Allergies
22 Apr
Summary
- Vancouver and Victoria face severe tree pollen allergies.
- Mild coastal temperatures create a 'perfect storm' for allergies.
- Allergy season began early in January and is expected to worsen.
Vancouver and Victoria are identified as the most challenging locations in Canada for individuals with tree pollen allergies. A report from Aerobiology Research Laboratories highlights that these British Columbia cities are prone to highly allergenic trees, such as birch and maple, coupled with an extended pollen season.
Laboratory director Daniel Coates explained that the coastal proximity and mild temperatures create an ideal environment for pollen production. This year's allergy season commenced early, with elevated pollen levels noted since January, significantly ahead of the rest of the country. Potent allergens like birch and oak are now contributing to the problem, compounding existing cedar and elm pollen.
Dr. Davidicus Wong, a family physician, is observing typical hay fever symptoms, including runny noses and itchy eyes, which may worsen as birch and oak pollen counts rise. He advises against drowsy antihistamines like Benadryl, recommending non-drowsy alternatives and saline rinses. To mitigate symptoms, experts suggest avoiding outdoor exercise during peak pollen times and keeping windows closed.
Nationally, overall pollen levels and the duration of pollen seasons have increased over the past three decades, a trend linked to climate change and warmer temperatures. This results in earlier seasonal onset and prolonged periods of pollination, impacting allergy sufferers across Canada.
