Teacher's Cancer Fight Sparks HPV Vaccine Awareness
11 Apr
Summary
- A Florida teacher was diagnosed with multiple HPV-related cancers.
- She discovered her HPV diagnosis after her husband's infidelity.
- She now advocates for the HPV vaccine to prevent similar fates.

Seven years after her initial diagnosis, a Florida woman is still undergoing painful cancer treatments and sharing her story to highlight the importance of the HPV vaccine.
Eileen McGill Fox, a mother of four and school teacher, discovered her husband's infidelity, prompting an STI screening. While negative for other STIs, a Pap smear a year later revealed HPV. This led to diagnoses of vulvar cancer in February 2019, followed by cervical cancer, and anal cancer in 2023.
Fox now understands that these HPV-related cancers were preventable with the HPV vaccine. She had not considered vaccination, as it was available after she was married. She has since undergone a hysterectomy and continues to receive treatment, including painful procedures to remove precancerous cells.
As a patient advocate, Fox aims to destigmatize discussions around HPV-related cancers and prevent others from suffering similar outcomes. She emphasizes that her experience, occurring in a long-term marriage, demonstrates that anyone can be affected by this virus.
