Doctors at AIIMS-Nagpur have successfully restored the swallowing function of a 23-year-old woman, who had been unable to eat for nearly two years. Her food pipe and upper digestive tract were severely damaged after ingesting a corrosive substance.
Initially dependent on tube feeding, her condition worsened significantly, leading to a drastic weight loss of up to 14kg by May 2025. She was admitted to AIIMS Nagpur and classified under the Below Poverty Line category for free treatment.
Over eight months, she underwent intensive rehabilitation, including nutritional therapy, physiotherapy, and psychological counseling. This preparation helped her regain mobility and weight before surgery.
A 10-hour reconstructive surgery was performed on January 12, where surgeons used a segment of her large intestine to reconstruct the food pipe. The procedure successfully restored the continuity of her digestive tract.
Following a smooth recovery, the patient resumed oral intake on the fifth postoperative day, consuming food normally for the first time since 2024. The entire treatment, including the complex surgery, was provided free of cost under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.
