5 Nov
Summary
- Woman died during uterine tumor surgery in a private hospital.
- Family alleges doctor stopped operation and left for lunch.
- Police await post-mortem report to determine cause of death.
A tragic incident occurred in Makardah, Howrah, where Swapna Pal, a 50-year-old panchayat office employee, passed away during a surgical procedure for a uterine tumor. Her family has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the private hospital and the attending gynaecologist, Biman Mitra, citing allegations of medical negligence.
The family's complaint suggests that the surgery was allegedly halted by Dr. Mitra, who then temporarily closed the patient's abdomen and departed for lunch, leaving Pal unattended and unconscious in the operating theatre. Reports indicate a nurse later discovered Pal deceased due to significant blood loss.
However, Dr. Mitra has refuted these claims of negligence. He informed the police that the tumor was considerably larger than initially indicated by ultrasound scans, leading to unforeseen complications during the surgery. He stated that he proceeded to stitch the abdomen and discontinued the procedure due to uncertainty on how to proceed further, asserting that an anaesthetist, a junior doctor, and two nurses remained present.
Conflicting statements have emerged from hospital officials and the doctor. The resident medical officer maintained that Pal was in a stable condition prior to the surgery. Law enforcement has dispatched the body for a post-mortem examination, emphasizing the critical importance of the upcoming report in clarifying the circumstances surrounding Pal's death.
