An 18-year-old woman, Jusmita Bora, has died after a 25-day struggle with complications that arose from a surgery performed on July 25. Her family claims the procedure at HGM Hospital in Golaghat, intended to remove a pancreatic duct stone, resulted in her entire abdomen being unnecessarily opened.
Following her discharge five days after the surgery, Jusmita's condition worsened. She received treatment in Jorhat and Guwahati before her death last week at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Her family alleges the surgery was performed without adequate assessment and that the nursing home lacked proper facilities.
Golaghat's district administration has initiated a magisterial probe led by assistant commissioner Mousumi Barman. The inquiry team includes medical professionals and will examine the case's medical aspects, including questioning the surgeon, Dr. Bhaskar Hazarika, who has been detained by police following an FIR filed by the family.
Protests erupted outside the hospital, with organizations demanding its closure. A public hearing is scheduled from August 26 to 29 to gather statements and evidence. Family members reported that doctors in Guwahati noted the stitching was inadequate for a surgical wound.
