Garden bite rots woman's leg leading to death
25 Sep
Summary
- Insect bite in garden led to severe infection and leg rot.
- Maggots developed in the wound before the woman's death.
- Family alleges GP surgery failed to properly investigate the infection.

Mandy Weaver, 48, experienced a fatal infection following an insect bite sustained in her garden during the summer of 2017.
Initially treated as a simple infection with antibiotics, the wound on her leg began to deteriorate within months, eventually affecting both limbs and oozing fluid. Her husband reported that maggots were discovered in the wound by September 2018.
Despite numerous visits to her GP surgery, her condition continued to worsen, leading to immobility and significant pain. Her husband claims the underlying cause of her symptoms was not adequately investigated by medical staff.
Tragically, Mandy was found deceased at her home on October 12, 2018. A coroner later determined her death was caused by a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that resulted in a pulmonary embolism.
Her family pursued a clinical negligence claim, alleging missed opportunities to diagnose and treat the escalating infection, which they believe contributed to the DVT and subsequent fatal embolism. The claim was settled without admission of liability.
