Plasma Site Reopens After Patient Deaths
21 Oct
Summary
- Plasma collection resumes at Winnipeg and Edmonton Grifols sites.
- Company voluntarily paused donations in August after two deaths.
- Health Canada has not linked any deaths to plasma donations.

Plasma collection activities are gradually resuming at Grifols donation centers in Winnipeg and Edmonton, following a shutdown by Health Canada. The company confirmed on Tuesday that phased resumption of services has begun at its Innovation Drive location in Winnipeg and its Windermere site in Edmonton.
Grifols had voluntarily paused its plasma donation collection in August. This decision followed the deaths of two people in Winnipeg, which had drawn public scrutiny. One patient passed away in October 2025 after a donation at the Taylor Avenue location, and another died in January 2026 following a donation at the Innovation Drive site.
Health Canada has not yet officially linked either of these fatalities to the plasma donation process. The company stated that operations would initially be at reduced appointment levels, with capacity increasing incrementally.
