As of May 23, 2026, Winnipeg's homeless community is now eligible for free hepatitis A vaccinations due to a growing outbreak. This initiative also extends to staff and volunteers working with this vulnerable population.
The Manitoba hepatitis A outbreak, initially identified in April 2025, has seen increasing cases in Winnipeg recently. By May 6, 2026, a total of 658 cases were linked to the outbreak, with 143 reported in Winnipeg. The virus, spread through contaminated water, food, or close contact, has led to 142 hospitalizations, five ICU admissions, and four deaths.
Free vaccine eligibility has been broadened to include members of specific First Nations communities, inmates of correctional facilities, and individuals traveling to or working in these areas. Existing criteria for high-risk groups, including those experiencing homelessness, drug users, and individuals with certain medical conditions, also apply.
Vaccination is crucial for preventing hepatitis A and can be effective even after exposure if administered within two weeks. Eligible individuals can receive the vaccine through primary care providers, public health offices, and health centers. Symptoms range from mild to severe and include fever, nausea, and jaundice. Strict hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, is advised to curb transmission.
