Sarah Fletcher is preparing to run the London Marathon, dedicating her efforts to the memory of her husband, Shaun, who tragically passed away on Christmas Eve 2024. Shaun, an electrician, had been working tirelessly to renovate their family home in Foulden, Norfolk, to better accommodate their son Toby, who has cerebral palsy and requires constant care.
Following Shaun's death, Sarah learned about Band of Builders, a charity based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, that supports construction workers and their families. The charity's volunteers took on the renovation project as their 45th build, completing a downstairs bedroom and a wet room for Toby. This endeavor has significantly improved their quality of life.
The charity, which also offers mental health support to those in the construction industry, received an overwhelming response, with 150 volunteers contributing to the project. Sarah and her daughter Elise are now running the marathon to express their gratitude and raise funds for Band of Builders to assist other families in similar situations.
Band of Builders is currently supporting another builder in Ipswich undergoing cancer treatment. Gavin Crane, the charity's CEO, expressed gratitude for Sarah and Elise's efforts in raising awareness and funds, enabling the charity to continue its vital work across the UK.
