WHO Chief: Ebola Crisis in Congo Demands Urgent Global Action
31 May
Summary
- WHO chief stresses swift international support is crucial for Ebola containment.
- Over 1,000 suspected Ebola cases and 200 deaths reported in DRC.
- International funding for Ebola response is significantly lacking.

The director general of the World Health Organization has underscored the necessity of rapid international aid to manage the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He stated that swift action is paramount to prevent the situation from becoming "a very serious problem."
The Ituri province is at the epicenter of the outbreak, with more than 1,000 suspected cases and over 200 reported deaths. Health officials highlight that containment remains the primary focus due to the absence of vaccines and treatments for this specific Ebola strain.
Significant challenges impede containment efforts, including low testing capacity, shortages of protective gear, and inadequate isolation facilities. The region's overall healthcare infrastructure is also insufficient to manage the crisis effectively.
While one healthcare worker has recently recovered and been discharged, offering a hopeful sign, international financial commitments to support the response have fallen short. The WHO chief indicated that only a third of the required funding has been secured, signaling a critical gap in global support.
