WHO Chief Battles Ebola Amidst DRC Conflict
29 May
Summary
- WHO head is in DR Congo to combat Ebola outbreak.
- Outbreak affects three provinces and Uganda.
- Displacement camps pose a high risk for virus spread.

World Health Organization (WHO) head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to confront an escalating Ebola outbreak. This marks the country's 17th outbreak, declared on May 15th, and has led to at least 1,077 suspected cases and 246 deaths as of Thursday. The outbreak's true extent is likely underestimated due to the DRC's limited testing capacity.
The virus has now spread across three DRC provinces and into neighboring Uganda, where seven confirmed infections and one death have occurred. The situation is complicated by ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, particularly in Ituri province, the outbreak's epicenter. Insecurity, fueled by militant groups, hinders efforts to reach affected populations.
Millions displaced by violence are living in overcrowded camps with inadequate sanitation, creating fertile ground for Ebola transmission. Health officials express grave concern about the epidemic spreading through these densely packed settlements. There is currently no vaccine for the specific Bundibugyo strain responsible for this outbreak, though one is expected by year-end.
