A mosquito sample collected in Pittsburgh's Point Breeze neighborhood on May 27 has tested positive for West Nile Virus. This finding, confirmed recently, marks the presence of the leading mosquito-borne disease in the United States. The virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes, which are most active between dusk and dawn.
Health officials recommend personal protection methods, including applying insect repellent to exposed skin and wearing long sleeves and pants to prevent bites. While most infected individuals experience no symptoms, about one in five may develop a fever and other flu-like symptoms. Serious illness is rare, affecting less than 1% of those infected.
The public is urged to identify and address stagnant water sources, which serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. To report potential breeding sites on public or private property, residents can contact the Allegheny County Health Department's Housing and Community Environment Program.
