Kerala on Alert: Five Suspected West Nile Fever Cases Emerge

Kerala's health department has been alerted to five suspected cases of West Nile fever in Ernakulam district. These potential cases have been reported from multiple areas, including Elanji, Eroor, and Palluruthy, raising concerns among authorities. The District Medical Officer stated that confirmation awaits laboratory test results, which are anticipated within 14 days. Officials are currently investigating and have not identified any specific infection clusters.

West Nile fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, primarily affecting birds and humans as incidental hosts. While most infections are asymptomatic or mild, a small percentage can lead to serious neurological complications, particularly in older adults or those with compromised immune systems. Diagnosis involves laboratory testing for specific antibodies or PCR in early stages.

To mitigate risks, individuals are advised to use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, and screen windows and doors. Communities are encouraged to eliminate stagnant water sources, which serve as mosquito breeding grounds, and implement coordinated efforts like fogging and public awareness campaigns.
