West Bengal Joins National Health Scheme

West Bengal is preparing to integrate into the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), marking a significant step towards universal health coverage in India. This integration will officially occur on Monday via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Health Authority and the West Bengal Department of Health and Family Welfare.

The inclusion under AB PM-JAY is anticipated to significantly enhance healthcare access for West Bengal's residents. Eligible families will receive health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year, specifically for secondary and tertiary hospitalizations. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain of medical expenses on vulnerable households.

Furthermore, beneficiaries will gain access to cashless treatment services through a broad network of public and private hospitals nationwide. This portability feature ensures that residents can receive care regardless of their location within India, reinforcing the scheme's commitment to equitable healthcare access. The integration is expected to strengthen the state's healthcare delivery system and advance the national goal of affordable healthcare for all citizens.
