The Government Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru has formally requested the Department of Health and Family Welfare to establish clear guidelines for patient referrals under both the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka (AB-ArK) and non-AB-ArK schemes. This appeal stems from difficulties in managing critically ill patients referred from various hospitals in Karnataka and neighboring Kerala, frequently without ensuring the availability of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. The hospital currently possesses 116 ICU beds, but these are often oversubscribed by referrals lacking prior coordination.
To address this challenge, the hospital has proposed a 10-point Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Key recommendations include referring patients only in genuine emergencies and prioritizing treatment within their home districts to mitigate the risks associated with transporting critically ill individuals. Furthermore, the hospital administration has requested the government to sanction 50 additional ICU beds along with the necessary staffing to meet the growing demand.
In parallel, the District Health Officer has cautioned private hospitals associated with the AB-ArK scheme against charging patients for treatments, as such expenses are reimbursed by the government. A state-level meeting is anticipated soon to review the implementation of the AB-ArK scheme. The hospital is also exploring the introduction of an online system to display real-time ICU bed availability, which would assist referring facilities in checking capacity before transferring patients.
