Wem residents are facing significant delays, with queues of up to an hour reported at the town's sole remaining pharmacy, Rowlands Pharmacy on New Street. This situation arose after another branch in the town closed approximately two weeks prior to the current date. The closure has led to increased patient demand at the single facility, prompting concerns about accessibility for all residents.

Rowlands Pharmacy has apologized for the extended waiting times, acknowledging that the recent Easter bank holiday period placed additional pressure on local healthcare services. This period often leads to higher demand over a reduced number of working days. Some patients, like Stan Barry, have experienced considerable waits only to find their prescriptions unavailable, requiring return visits. The town's infrastructure, with ongoing roadworks, further complicates travel for residents attempting to access the pharmacy.

Janet Bromley emphasized the town's need for a second chemist, noting that some elderly residents who rely on public transport would struggle to reach the distant pharmacy. Rowlands Pharmacy, part of Phoenix, stated that safe, high-quality care remains its priority. The company highlighted the sustained financial pressures community pharmacies have faced for years and confirmed the merger of its two Wem branches followed the formal NHS regulatory process. Additional staff have been deployed to support the team, and the service will continue to be reviewed.
