Mum Regains 5 Stone, Warns Against Quick Fix Surgery
20 Sep
Summary
- Weight loss surgery is a tool, not a solution for habits.
- Mum regained five stone after initial weight loss success.
- She found support and control with a weight loss group.

Maz Wilkinson, a mother from Merstham, Surrey, has shared her experience to caution others about the limitations of weight loss surgery. After undergoing a gastric bypass in January 2013 and losing over 12 stone, she found herself regaining around five stone due to old habits resurfacing.
Wilkinson emphasized that bariatric surgery, while a significant tool for initial weight loss, did not address her underlying mindset or relationship with food. Recognizing the need for support, she rejoined her local Slimming World group in May 2024.
She discovered that the group's healthy eating plan, 'food optimising,' offers practical and balanced nutrition suitable for smaller portions. This approach, combined with planning and home cooking, has helped her regain control and confidence.
Maz is also incorporating activity through home workout videos with her daughter and plans to become a Slimming World consultant to help others on their journey, highlighting that self-belief and willingness to take the first step are crucial for positive change.
