Obesity Surgery Boosts Fertility in Women
11 Sep
Summary
- Bariatric surgery improves menstrual cycle frequency for women with obesity.
- Weight-loss surgery helps reduce hormonal fluctuations affecting fertility.
- Many women with PCOS experienced improvements after surgery.
A recent study published in Obesity Surgery indicates that bariatric surgery could be a viable option for women with obesity seeking to improve their fertility. The research followed 84 women who underwent weight-loss surgery, comparing them to 18 who did not.
Participants who had surgery lost an average of over 66 pounds. This weight loss was associated with improvements in reproductive health, including more regular menstrual cycles and reduced hormonal fluctuations.
Notably, within two years of surgery, 9 out of 10 women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as PCOS, no longer had the condition. Overall, 17 women who had the surgery went on to have healthy pregnancies.
Researchers suggest that clinicians should consider medical interventions for obesity to address menstrual irregularities and fertility issues, potentially improving the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy post-surgery.
