Weight Loss Jabs: New Risks Emerge

Weight loss injections, including popular drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro, are facing scrutiny for potential side effects not explicitly listed by manufacturers. While widely recognized for aiding rapid weight loss by reducing appetite, these GLP-1 medications may also be associated with reproductive symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles and temperature fluctuations, such as chills and hot flashes. Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania conducted a study analyzing nearly 70,000 Reddit posts between May 2019 and June 2025. This analysis revealed that, in addition to common issues like nausea (36.9%) and fatigue (16.7%), reproductive and temperature-related complaints emerged as unrecognized potential effects.

Researchers emphasize that while they cannot definitively state GLP-1s cause these symptoms, the reported prevalence warrants further investigation. Nearly four percent of Reddit users in the sample reported menstrual irregularities, a figure expected to be higher in a female-only group. Experts suggest that the indirect effects of rapid weight loss, reduced calorie intake, and metabolic changes may influence hormonal balance and the body's thermoregulation. These findings underscore the potential of AI-assisted social media analysis to identify early warning signs associated with emerging drug trends, especially for substances available in unregulated markets.
