Weight Loss Jabs Aid Asthma & Migraine Sufferers
15 May
Summary
- GLP-1 drugs show promise in reducing asthma symptoms and migraine medication use.
- Studies suggest weight loss is a major factor in symptom improvement.
- Significant reductions in inhaler and migraine drug use observed in patients.

Research presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul suggests that GLP-1 drugs, commonly used for weight loss, can also alleviate symptoms of asthma and migraines. These findings indicate a potential new benefit for millions suffering from these conditions.
In a study of obese asthma patients in Denmark, those using GLP-1 therapies experienced a 26% decrease in asthma exacerbations and a 14% reduction in inhaler use over one year. Researchers believe weight loss is a primary driver for these improvements, noting that excess fat tissue can promote inflammation, a common factor in both asthma and obesity.
A separate study involving nearly 150,000 individuals in Denmark found that women using these weight loss injections reported a 7% decrease in the use of triptan medications for migraines. The effect was more pronounced in young women aged 18 to 35, who saw an 18% reduction.
Scientists theorize that weight loss may reduce the inflammatory processes linked to migraines. Additionally, GLP-1 drugs might have direct effects on the central nervous system, influencing migraine pathways. This research opens new avenues for treatment for the estimated 7.2 million asthma and 10 million migraine sufferers in the UK.
