Weight Loss Jabs Linked to Falling Nails
1 Oct
Summary
- GLP-1 users are over four times more likely to experience nail detachment.
- 66% of GLP-1 users reported at least one nail issue, study finds.
- Researchers caution that nail changes may not be solely treatment-induced.

A recent study presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress 2026 indicates a significant association between GLP-1 weight loss injections and nail disorders. The research found that users of these popular treatments were more than four times as likely to report nail detachment. Overall, 66% of GLP-1 users experienced at least one nail disorder, compared to 53% of a control group. Nail discoloration was also notably more common among treatment users.
Researchers emphasize that while the link is clear, it cannot be definitively stated that GLP-1s directly cause these nail changes. Dr. Charles Taïeb highlighted that nearly half of users reported pre-existing nail problems. The study, which recruited participants across France, the US, Brazil, and Mexico, also noted increased rates of scalp and hair symptoms, including itching and redness, among GLP-1 users.
Dr. Bruno Halioua suggests that scalp inflammation might play a role beyond typical shedding associated with rapid weight loss. Patients experiencing hair shedding, itchy scalps, or nail changes are advised to consult their doctor rather than discontinuing treatment, as these frequent, usually benign changes do not warrant stopping effective therapy.
