Weight Loss Jabs: Long-Term Damage Warning Issued
25 May
Summary
- Weight-loss injections may cause malnutrition and muscle loss.
- Experts advise nutrient-dense foods and resistance training.
- Long-term use of injections may be necessary for some patients.

Millions of individuals utilizing weight-loss injections are being cautioned about potential long-term health detriments. Experts emphasize that without concurrent adjustments to diet and exercise, users risk malnutrition, muscle degeneration, and decreased bone density. A significant European obesity conference in Istanbul issued a consensus statement raising alarms about GLP-1 drug use detached from lifestyle changes. The statement, co-authored by 26 leading obesity specialists, asserts that continued consumption of unhealthy foods, even in reduced quantities, can lead to malnutrition.
Research presented at the conference revealed that approximately one-third of weight lost through these injections can be non-fat mass, primarily muscle and bone. Experts advocate for prioritizing nutrient-dense foods, ensuring adequate protein, fiber, and fluid intake. Crucially, resistance training is recommended two to three times weekly, supplemented by 150 to 300 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. For some patients, lifelong use of these injections may be necessary due to permanent changes in brain signaling related to satiety, as suggested by Professor Louis Aronne of Weill Cornell Medicine.
The weekly injections mimic the GLP-1 hormone, promoting an earlier sense of fullness, and have enabled significant weight loss, up to a fifth of body weight for some. However, concerns persist regarding the long-term management of weight and the mitigation of potential adverse effects. Approximately 2.5 million individuals in Britain currently use these injections, often through private prescriptions, amid questions about the NHS's capacity to provide essential support and the rise of online unlicensed drug sellers.
