Weight-Loss Drugs Curb Mental Health Decline
19 Mar
Summary
- GLP-1 drugs show potential in reducing mental health issues.
- Semaglutide linked to 42% lower risk of mental health worsening.
- Study analyzed over 95,000 Swedish medical records.

A significant analysis of Swedish medical records indicates that weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic may offer protection against the worsening of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. These GLP-1 receptor agonists, originally developed for type 2 diabetes, mimic a natural hormone to control appetite and blood sugar.
The study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, examined data from over 95,000 individuals over 13 years who had experienced mental health challenges. Individuals taking semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, demonstrated a 42% lower likelihood of experiencing a decline in their mental health.
Further findings revealed that semaglutide use was associated with an 18% reduced risk of mental health deterioration. While these results are encouraging, experts emphasize that the drugs do not directly treat mental illness but may help prevent symptom exacerbation in existing conditions. The study was observational, and further randomized controlled trials are recommended.
