Weight-Loss Jabs: A Lifelong Commitment?
8 Jan
Summary
- Most users regain lost weight within two years of stopping injections.
- Weight returned much faster than with traditional dieting methods.
- Benefits for heart health also faded after drug cessation.

Experts caution that Britons using weight-loss injections might need to stay on them for life. A comprehensive review of 37 studies involving over 9,300 individuals found that weight regain is rapid after stopping treatment, often occurring within two years.
This study indicates that weight returns roughly four times faster than with diet and exercise alone. Moreover, cardiometabolic benefits, such as improved blood sugar and blood pressure, also reversed within 18 months of cessation, mirroring pre-treatment levels.
The findings challenge current NHS policies, which often limit treatment duration. Experts suggest viewing obesity as a chronic condition requiring sustained management, akin to managing blood pressure or diabetes, potentially involving lifelong medication or behavioral support.
