Indoor Life Weakens Bones: Surgeon's Warning
29 Oct
Summary
- Prolonged indoor time depletes vital sunlight exposure for bone health.
- Lack of movement indoors reduces bone density, especially in younger adults.
- Dietary calcium and protein intake are crucial for bone strength.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Sumit Badhwar warns that prolonged indoor stays detrimentally affect bone health, impacting individuals in their 20s and 30s. Sunlight is crucial as it enables skin to produce vitamin D, which aids calcium absorption. Without adequate sun exposure, bones can weaken. Sitting indoors for extended periods also means reduced physical activity, a key stimulus for bone strengthening. This lack of load-bearing activity is especially concerning during the critical years of peak bone mass development, up to the early 30s.
Dr. Badhwar highlights that sedentary lifestyles contribute to weakened muscles around the spine and hips, leading to common back pain among desk workers. Lifestyle habits like poor nutrition, including low calcium and protein intake, and excessive alcohol consumption further compound these issues. To maintain strong bones, he advises regular, brief sun exposure (avoiding sunburn), incorporating more movement like walking and strength training, and consuming calcium-rich foods alongside sufficient protein.
