28 Apr
Summary
- Thousands of students may be suspended starting May 7 due to incomplete immunization records.
- Parents have until May 4 to submit updated vaccine records or valid exemptions.
- Over 4,200 students still had out-of-date records as of April 21.
Parents in Waterloo region must ensure their elementary students' immunization records are up-to-date by May 4 to prevent school suspensions beginning May 7. Region of Waterloo Public Health has set the deadline for 4:30 p.m. on that date. Over 9,200 students were initially identified with incomplete records at the start of the year.
As of April 21, approximately 4,248 elementary students still required updated vaccination documentation. Public health is actively working to support families by offering appointments and assistance for record submission, aiming to minimize the time students miss from school. Over 700 high school students were suspended in April for similar reasons.
The Immunization of School Pupils Act mandates proof of vaccination or a valid exemption for several diseases, including measles, diphtheria, and pertussis. Exemptions can be medical or philosophical, with specific procedures for each. Health officials emphasize the importance of these vaccinations for community health.
