Expert Warns: Poorly Maintained Filters Breed Bacteria
15 Apr
Summary
- Unmaintained water filters can become dangerous bacteria breeding grounds.
- British tap water is safe, with rigorous regulation and testing.
- Lead contamination from old pipes fuels demand for home filters.

Water filters, often used to combat concerns about chemicals like PFAS and lead, can paradoxically pose health risks if not maintained correctly. Marcus Rink, chief inspector at the Drinking Water Inspectorate, cautioned that neglecting filter maintenance can turn them into breeding grounds for bacteria. He emphasized that drinking water in England and Wales is of high quality and subject to rigorous testing.
Demand for filters has grown due to concerns over 'forever chemicals' (PFAS) and lead contamination from old plumbing. Lead pipes are still present in millions of homes, and illegal use of lead solder by plumbers has been reported. While filters can help in older homes with lead issues, their maintenance is critical.
Professor Vanessa Speight explained that activated carbon filters can become overwhelmed. When pores fill, contaminants can re-enter the water, leading to worse conditions. Manufacturers typically recommend monthly or quarterly filter changes, a crucial step often overlooked by consumers. The Royal Society of Chemistry also noted concerning PFAS levels in watercourses, advocating for stricter limits.
