NHS Centre Review Sparks Fears of Healthcare Gap
3 Sep
Summary
- NHS centre in Wakefield is under review by health chiefs.
- Fewer people use the centre, with more opting for GP or pharmacy.
- A previous petition saved the centre from closure four years ago.

The future of a vital NHS walk-in centre in Wakefield is uncertain as health chiefs have placed it under review. A recent NHS report indicates the facility, located on King Street, "no longer reflects how people choose access to care." This assessment stems from a decrease in patient numbers, with an increasing preference for same-day appointments at GP clinics or local pharmacies.
This situation echoes a similar review in 2022, which saw over 2,000 individuals sign a petition to save the centre. At that time, local MP Simon Lightwood warned of a potential "healthcare black hole" if it were to close. Following public outcry, the Wakefield District Health and Care Partnership (WDHCP) secured a lease extension.
The WDHCP has confirmed the contract for the centre has been extended until October 2027, with a possibility for a further 12-month extension. Health leaders are currently evaluating various options for the service's future. These proposals are being carefully considered to assess potential benefits, risks, and impacts on the local population before final decisions are made.
