7 Mar
Summary
- Volunteers needed to walk with partially sighted individuals.
- Service aims to build confidence and combat isolation.
- Training provided for guiding individuals with sight loss.

Warwickshire Vision Support is actively seeking volunteers for a new walking befriender service designed to alleviate isolation experienced by individuals with sight loss. This initiative encourages volunteers to accompany partially sighted people on walks, ranging from neighborhood strolls to visits to local parks or cafes, with the primary goal of enhancing their confidence and providing companionship.
Michael Tayte, who has benefitted from a similar service after losing his sight, shared how challenging everyday navigation can be. He emphasized the dual benefits of the service: practical assistance with visual challenges and emotional support through conversation and shared experiences. The charity, established in 1911, is looking for friendly, patient volunteers who enjoy the outdoors and meeting new people. Comprehensive training on guiding techniques will be provided, removing the need for specialist experience.
