Vitamin B12: The Muscle Aging Secret?
11 Jul
Summary
- Low B12 may impair muscle cell mitochondria function.
- Supplementation improved mitochondrial biology in aging mice.
- B12 deficiency can exacerbate age-related muscle weakness.

New research indicates that vitamin B12 deficiency might significantly impact muscle health, especially as individuals age. Studies suggest that insufficient B12 can disrupt the proper functioning of mitochondria within skeletal muscle cells, cells responsible for converting food and oxygen into usable energy.
Preclinical studies on mice revealed that a mild B12 deficiency led to visibly smaller muscles and impaired energy production. However, vitamin B12 supplementation in aging mice demonstrated an improvement in mitochondrial biology and helped maintain muscle mass, suggesting a potential role in combating sarcopenia.
While human trials are still needed, these findings highlight B12's importance. Vegetarians and vegans are at higher risk due to B12's primary source in animal products. Absorption can also decrease with age. Consulting a doctor to check B12 levels is recommended before considering supplements, as excessively high doses have been linked to adverse outcomes.
