Govt Hospital Achieves Surgical Infection Zero
26 Apr
Summary
- Victoria Hospital's trauma center reported zero surgical infections since 2017.
- Over 31,000 surgeries performed without a single infection by 2025.
- A new diagnostic lab will enhance infection detection and antibiotic testing.

Victoria Hospital's trauma and emergency care centre (TECC) in Bengaluru has achieved a rare milestone, maintaining a zero surgical site infection (SSI) rate since commencing surgeries in 2017. This exceptional record was established over a period spanning from 2017 up to an unspecified point in 2025, during which the center performed a total of 31,780 surgeries.
Surgical site infections, which occur within 30 days of an operation, can lead to severe complications. Nationally, SSIs are reported at approximately 5.2%, with orthopedic surgeries showing a rate of 5.4% according to a 2025 ICMR report.
Dr. Asima Banu, special officer at TECC, attributed this success to rigorous hygiene protocols, judicious antibiotic administration, and continuous oversight by the infection control department. The center's achievements are slated for publication in medical journals.
Further bolstering its capabilities, TECC, affiliated with Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, will soon house South India's first ICMR Integrated Reference Diagnostic Laboratory (IRDL). Expected to be inaugurated shortly, this facility will expedite infection identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing.
