13 Mar
Summary
- Viatris settled a lawsuit with Henrietta Lacks' estate over unauthorized cell use.
- The HeLa cell line, derived from Lacks' tumor, revolutionized medical research.
- Settlement details remain confidential, ending a long legal dispute.

Viatris, a generic drug manufacturer, recently settled a lawsuit with the estate of Henrietta Lacks. The legal action concerned the alleged misuse of Lacks' cells for developing medical products without her consent.
The case was dismissed with prejudice in a federal court in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday, March 12, 2026. The family's estate confirmed they were pleased with the resolution, though settlement terms are confidential.
Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman, sought treatment for cervical cancer in 1951. Doctors took a sample of her tumor, from which the HeLa cell line was cultivated without her knowledge. These cells were the first to survive indefinitely in laboratory conditions.
The HeLa cells have since been foundational to global medical research, contributing to developments from the polio vaccine to HIV treatments. Lacks' estate had previously settled related lawsuits with other pharmaceutical companies.
