Decorated Pilot's Battle: Urgent Call for Stem Cell Donor

A decorated British military veteran is urgently appealing for a stem cell donor following a life-threatening blood disorder diagnosis. The 43-year-old former RAF Chinook pilot, who received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in Afghanistan, has severe aplastic anaemia. This rare condition prevents his bone marrow from producing new blood cells.

Doctors have informed him that a stem cell transplant is his best chance at survival. He is currently receiving blood transfusions twice weekly while awaiting a suitable match. His brother, identified as only a partial match, has prompted a search of international donor registries.

The veteran, who is of mixed heritage, faces greater difficulty in finding a compatible donor. Blood cancer charity DKMS highlights that stem cell registries often lack diversity, impacting individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds. He now resides in Los Angeles and is expecting another child soon.

He has shared his story to encourage public registration as potential stem cell donors, emphasizing the ease of the process and the profound impact it can have. Signing up involves a simple process of health questions and cheek swabs, offering a chance to save a life.
