Tribal Hilltop Awaits Health Centre
3 Aug
Summary
- Tribal residents trek 20 km for medical care.
- A new government health centre is proposed for Alleri hillock.
- The new centre will include doctors, nurses, and snakebite wards.

Residents of Alleri hillock, a tribal area in Vellore, are in urgent need of improved healthcare access. Currently, they must travel approximately 20 km on difficult terrain to reach the Government Taluk Hospital in Anaicut. Collector P.S. Leela Alex has formally requested the National Health Mission's approval to establish a full-fledged government health centre atop Alleri hillock.
This initiative highlights the plight of approximately 300 families in three tribal villages, who face significant challenges accessing basic medical facilities. The proposed health centre is considered a special case due to the area's inaccessibility, with plans for duty doctors, staff nurses, and specialized wards for snakebites. This will alleviate the current ordeal of transporting sick individuals, including expectant mothers, on uneven paths.
The new centre will also feature laboratory facilities, a pharmacy, and ambulance services for referrals. This development follows efforts to provide basic amenities to the region, including roads and a PDS outlet. The move aims to ensure safe and timely healthcare for the community, similar to other tribal hamlets with better road connectivity.
